So apparently my health issues are “unfair” and an inconvenience. Because I can’t schedule ahead of time when I’ll need time off. I’m sorry I couldn’t plan an illness more than 4 days in advance, and I’ll try to do better next time. It’s not fair to my co-workers when I have to take time off.

It’s not fair that I can’t go out and play with the kids in the snow for fear of moving something the wrong way and being out of work for a week.

It’s not fair that I worry about having seizures at work and embarrassing myself.

It’s not fair that I spend almost $100 a month in medication.

It’s not fair that I have more doctors than children.

It’s not fair that I have FMLA, and STILL have to catch shit about making a doctors appointment. Even ahead of time.

And finally, it’s not fair that “every week there’s something”. Yeah, you’re right, every week there IS something. I don’t like it either. I want to have a week where nothing hurts, nothing shakes, and nothing feels like a bad LSD trip.

I’ll get right to work on that.

So life goes on at the Chicken Ranch. Though we’re having to split up duties more and more these days in order to get things done, I still feel like I’m behind in so much. Matt has been really good about taking care of the critters outside, and I’ve been concentrating more on the inside issues. Things are winding down for the year, and we’re settling everything in for a long winters nap. This weekend the garden will get put to bed, and it’s time to start deciding which chickens will still be with us for the winter. There are several roosters that need to be dispatched before winter, and I don’t have the gumption to do it. I need to get it together, as I’ll ALWAYS have too many roosters. I could do the dispatching, but it’s the cleaning that I can’t handle. So I’m in the position of too many chickens, and not enough courage. I need to get rid of at least 6 before winter comes on.

Soaping goes well. I’m working on a batch of god/goddess soaps now. I’m basing the scents on the regions that the deities come from, and the basic characteristics of each. Should be fun. I’m also starting to work on making my own makeup. i figure i can make small batches of what i need when i need it instead of keeping it till it goes bad. I made a purple trio last night. We’ll see how that works. I didn’t get to use any this morning. Isabella made some barbie doll blue though. o_O

Bees! I’m pretty much done with bee research for now.. the rest has to wait for a couple of months until I can get gear ordered. The reading is done, and now the rest has to wait for Spring. I’ve decided on one hive, with 2 deeps and 2 supers. That should be small enough to keep it simple, and large enough to give us a good little bit of honey.

We got a bird! I’ve been wanting a conure since I saw one in PetSmart several months ago. (Wasn’t about to buy it there though.) So I started reading up on them. They’re smart little buggers, and not as neurotic or prone to bad behaviour as the larget birds. i’d almost decided to just wait till next year, but we went to Sandy’s to get replacement fish for the kids, and a loval breeder had brought in a clutch of 5. There were 3 left, and Loki was the sweetest of the 3. He’s been a delight so far, and we’re working on NOT letting him develop any bad habits. Since he’s only 3 months old, now is the time to teach him to be a good bird Next project: Salt water tank with Seahorses

Squeaky clean- how NOT to make soap.

I had to add this as a caveat on what NOT to do with soap. See, I was making a batch that I was hoping would be a nice kelp green colour. WRONG.

I thought something was wrong when it started to turn a little… tan.

You can see the bits of sea kelp that I put in. They didn’t stay green when they hit the lye. Lesson learned.

This is where I keep all the crap.

I let it cure in the top of the cabinet with my Pretty Pretty Princess dishes. No, I never use them.

My mascot. He lives in the cabinet too, and was made by someone at a Psych hospital. A friend got him at a yard sale at said hospital, and thought I’d find him funny. I do. He’s my buddy.

So this week has been chilly, and there’s a smell in the air that says we’re pretty much done with Summer. The stores have their Halloween gear out, the pumpkins are taking over the grocery, and the blooms are fading off the last of the flowers. The wild Aster (some call it a weed) is one of the last ones to stop producing pollen. Naturally, every bee for miles comes to check it out. We had quite a crowd at Chez Bad Seed today, and a couple of guests that i’ve never seen before. So here you go…

This little lady is brand new this year. She’s GORGEOUS! And she’s made a decision to put her egg sack in our Bee Balm. It’s makes me happy that she’s decided to stick around.

This little girl is working hard, but I don’t know that there’s much she’s getting.
